A new partnership: The International Postgraduate School of Medicine in Kazakhstan and E-Quadrat Science & Education

The National Public Health Development Fund (NPHD) and the International Healthcare Equity Agency (IHEA) jointly launched an international project to help young oncologists in Kazakhstan acquire world-class knowledge of the field. The International Postgraduate School of Medicine, for which E-Quadrat Science & Education is a strategic consultant, is a blended format programme that includes both class-time and hand-on experience in international hospitals.

“This project is an excellent example of the benefits of transnational education. It helps to bring a world-class level of education to the country and boost the growth of the next generation of physicians in Kazakhstan and for Kazakhstan. TNE is a very important driver of education excellence in transition economies, and a big priority for E-Quadrat. We are thrilled to provide our expertise and to back NPHD and IHEA in this endeavour. We envision a huge potential for this project and believe that it will expand significantly within the next few years. And that growth and expansion is something we are happy to support”, says E-Quadrat CEO Egor Yablokov.

Twenty young doctors from Atyrau, Astana, Almaty, Shymkent, and Karaganda are also helping to launch the IPSM programme as its first residents, selected from more than 300 applications. Applicants were assessed over four rounds and had to demonstrate not only specific medical competencies, but also strong soft skills—the ability to communicate, quickly adapt to changes and make decisions in non-standard situations. Classes began on 1 October.

Over the next two years, they will acquire the skills of critical reading of medical literature, decision-making in the concept of evidence-based medicine, organisation of clinical trials, and effective communication with patients and colleagues—the whole set of competences of a modern oncologist. The School's teachers are world-class experts from clinics in Israel, Russia and the US, and a special part of the programme involves a long internship in Israeli clinics. The course concludes with an independent exam from European professional organisations. The project’s leaders and organisers are confident that such programmes are what is needed to grow a new generation of specialists in Kazakhstan capable of significantly improving the country's statistics in the treatment of oncological disease.

Over the course of this year, the IPSM in Kazakhstan began courses in oncology and oncohematology; however, it expects to expand the list of fields it will cover in future. The work of the IPSM School in Kazakhstan is financed by private and corporate benefactors. The programme has been developed by the International Healthcare Equity Agency, an Israeli non-profit organisation whose mission is to overcome disparities in access to quality healthcare in different countries.
